Club Data Customer Support -- Tech Note #3

Changing the Club Office Backup Destination Drive

Applies to: Club Office - all versions
Last updated: Monday January 17, 2011.

SUMMARY

As installed, the default Club Office backup and restore utilities are set to back up to the floppy diskette drive A:. The number of diskettes required to back up the data will grow over time, and it may be desirable to change the drive designation to be more convenient, as it might be for users who have a ZIP drive or wish to back up the system internally to another computer on the network.

Note: This procedure outlines what to do, not the exact steps to do it. It is assumed that the end-user is proficient in the modification of startup shortcuts for Windows 95, 98 and/or NT. The backup and restore shortcuts are automatically installed in the START menu under the Club Data program group.

Notice - Jan 11, 2000: If you have not downloaded and installed the new backup system (dated 1-9-2000), please do so. The old way works quite well but because of a newly discovered bug in Windows 95 and 98, there's a possibility that your backup may not include all the files you may think. The new method traps for the situation and alerts the user that the backup (or restore) may be incomplete and suggests corrective action. The new system is in the Downloads area, complete with easy to follow installation instructions.

PROCEDURE

The batch file that controls the backup and/or restore module drive designation uses a command line parameter as the drive designation. Therefore, the following default command line for the shortcut reads as follows: cdcobkup A to back up to diskette drive A:

To change to another drive, such as to drive B:, you would change the command line to read as follows:

cdcobkup B

Notice that the command line does not include the traditional colon after the drive letter.

If you have a ZIP drive installed as drive F: for example, you might change the command line to be:

cdcobkup F

Similarly, you could use any mapped network drive in the same fashion.

IMPORTANT: If you are not using the new backup system (dated 1-9-2000) and you're using the old batch file method instead, be sure to change the restore command line parameter to match the backup parameter. The syntax is: cdcorest A to restore from diskette drive A: If you fail to do this, should the need arise you will not be able to restore the system from your chosen drive!
