Staff Training Made Easy

Want a super-easy way to train your staff in how to use your POS system? One of the benefits is that everybody gets the SAME information, everybody learns how YOU want to do things, and YOU don't have to spend a lot of time doing it! Here's how:

  1. Write down the steps you take when you ring up a cash sale on your POS system.
  2. Do the same with a sale that's charged to a member account (it's probably a little different).
  3. Do it again for a sale when a person pays with a check -- it's probably different yet again.
  4. Lastly, if you allow customers to pay via credit card, write down those steps, too.
  5. Get your video camera and train it on your video screen. Press RECORD.
  6. Walk and talk through the cash sale two times.
  7. Walk and talk through the member charge sale twice, too.
  8. Do the same with the check sale, and finally with the credit card sale.
  9. Make 3 or 4 copies of the videotape; store the original in a safe place. Make 3 or 4 copies of your written procedures, too.
  10. When a new employee starts, give him/her a copy of the video to watch and a set of the paper copies of the procedures. Have him/her practice the procedure by watching the video over and over.
  11. Test the employee after a day or two.
  12. If you feel inclined, you could also include procedures for ringing up return sales, reprinting receipts, creating inventory items, and more. But the idea is to make the video once and use it over and over again to train your staff.
